Vol. 259 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Convent School.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received any reply from the Loreto Sisters to his suggestion that their secondary school in Clonmel, County Tipperary be phased out; if so, the nature of the reply; and if before reaching a final decision in the matter he will consult representatives of the parents who are unanimous in their desire that the school should continue in existence.

I have received a reply from the manager of the school to the effect that the parents of children attending this particular school had unanimously decided that they wanted the school to continue and that the Loreto Sisters have agreed to comply with their wishes.

Before finally deciding on the matter I will, of course, be glad to arrange for representatives of the parents to discuss the matter with officers of my Department.

Having regard to the particularly strong opposition, by the community concerned, the parents, Church leaders, civic dignitaries in the area, will the Minister be kind enough to meet personally a deputation of all concerned?

I will arrange that my officials will meet them. I find it rather difficult to meet all the deputations that want to meet me. I will consider the situation when they have met my officials and see what I can do.

May I ask the Minister what discretion, if any, is left to the community to continue to operate the school, despite the intentions of the Minister's Department?

We had better leave that until we have had discussions with the representatives of the parents.

That will be at an early date?

As soon as I can arrange it, yes.
