Vol. 259 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Officials Salary Differential.

7.

asked the Minister for Health the salary paid to (a) the secretary, Department of Health and (b) each of the CEOs of the health boards; and the reasons for the difference.

The salary of the secretary of the Department of Health is £6,525 a year.

The salaries of the chief executive officers of the health boards are:

Eastern Health Board

£5,770×£143—£6,345

South-Eastern, Southern and Western Health Boards

£5,185×£143—£5,760

Other Health Boards

£4,600×£144—£5,175

The salary has in each case been determined in relation to the responsibilities of the office.

All the salaries referred to are subject to review currently by the review body on higher remunerations in the public service.

Would the Minister agree that the salaries of the chief executive officers are now higher than the salaries of county managers? Can the Minister state if they have more responsibilities than county managers?

I understand it is regarded, in view of the large area they have to oversee, that they have responsibilities greater than that of a county manager.

I do not believe that.
