Vol. 259 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry School Course.

14.

asked the Minister for Education if he will reconsider the proposal to discontinue the leaving certificate course at the Presentation Convent, Lixnaw, County Kerry, which has been available there for over forty years.

My first consideration in relation to this as to all such other cases must be the interest of all the pupils and that includes ensuring that every pupil has available to him or her a course which will suit his or her particular aptitude and ability. There could be no possibility of doing this in a school with a total enrolment of only 100 pupils. Exception might be made in the case of a school in an isolated area where the nearest post-primary centre is so far distant as to make travel extremely difficult. This is not so in the case of Lixnaw where the nearest post-primary school is only a few miles away.

Where is the post-primary school that is only a few miles away?

If the Deputy is seeking information I can tell him that Lixnaw is about eight miles from Listowel, about six miles from Causeway and 11 miles from Tralee.

To which of the secondary schools is it proposed to send these students?

My information is that Causeway is the obvious place.
