Vol. 259 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Garda Station.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí stationed at Passage East, County Waterford in 1950 and 1971; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The strength of Passage East Garda Station, on 31st December, 1950 was one sergeant and three gardaí. On 31st December, 1971, the approved strength was one sergeant and one garda, but the garda was absent on temporary transfer. He will be resuming duty at Passage East before the end of the month.

Is the Minister aware that the catchment area of the Passage East Garda district is quite large? It extends from Passage East to Dunmore East and down almost to the city of Waterford. Staffing with one sergeant and one garda is inadequate. The sergeant is very popular and he is doing excellent work. When these extra gardaí are recruited, would the Minister consider reverting to the former strength of one sergeant and three gardaí at Passage East?

No. The Garda authorities indicate that the strength of one sergeant and one garda is reasonably adequate for the area and there is no proposal to increase that strength.

Question No. 33.

Is the Minister aware——

I have called Question No. 33.

This is the second time you have stopped me asking supplementary questions. Yesterday I asked one and you did not allow it. You are most unfair to this side of the House, most unfair.

Of course, he is very unfair and he has shown it over and over again.

Most unfair. You make little of public representatives in this House.
