Vol. 259 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway School.

38.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the very poor condition of Tiaquin national school, Colemanstown, Ballinasloe, County Galway; and if in view of the situation there at the moment he will consider taking the necessary steps to have a new school provided as soon as possible.

It is proposed to replace the existing Tiaquin and Newcastle national schools by a new central school at Newcastle. A suitable site has been offered and the Office of Public Works will now be asked to have sketch plans prepared.

Essential repairs will be carried out to Tiaquin school to render it satisfactory for continued school use pending the provision of the new central school. A grant will be allowed towards the cost of the repairs.

Can the Minister say when the repairs to Tiaquin school will be carried out?

I understand that repair work is being carried out there now.

Is the Minister aware that on the 3rd of March an eight foot window crashed into a room where there were 25 pupils and a teacher?

I am aware that there was a problem in relation to storm damage and the Department arranged immediately for the necessary repairs to be carried out. I understand that repair work is being carried out there at present.

I would emphasise the need for urgent repairs to this school.
