Vol. 259 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Unemployed.

48.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the serious unemployment situation in north-east Galway; and, if so, if he has any plans to establish much needed new industry in this area.

I am aware of the employment position in the area to which the Deputy refers.

The Industrial Development Authority are at present considering an industrial proposal which may be located in north-east Galway, but I cannot give any details at this stage. In addition, as the Deputy is already aware, the authority, in accordance with their interim advance factory programme, propose to provide advance factories at Mount Bellew and Ballygar. Negotiations to secure sites for these factories are in progress and it is not yet possible to say when the factories will be completed and ready for use.

Does the Minister's reply indicate that there is something "in the bag" for north-east Galway? Is there some kind of industry which the Minister is not prepared to discuss coming to north-east Galway?

I said that the IDA are at present considering an industrial proposal which may be located in north-east Galway, but I cannot give details yet.

Would the Minister tell me whether this proposed industry which has been referred to would employ many? How far would it go towards solving the unemployment problem?

It would create employment.

How many jobs?

The particular industry that I am thinking of would give 100 jobs, apart altogether from the two advance factories.
