Vol. 260 No. 1

Written Answers. - Wage and Salary Earners.

184.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the current number of insured wage and salary earners in the State; and the estimated total number currently making PAYE contributions.

The number of persons effectively insured under the Social Welfare Acts at the 31st March, 1971, the latest date for which figures are available, is estimated to be 808,000. The Office of the Revenue Commissioners state that the number of effectively liable PAYE taxpayers for the 1970-71 financial year, the latest period for which information is available, is about 500,000. It is not possible to say how many insured wage and salary earners are liable for PAYE tax.
