Contrary to the implication in the Deputy's question the average weekly number unemployed in March, as measured by the live register, was 1,360 less than the average weekly figures in February. Moreover, the number unemployed on the 30th March was approximately 460 less than on the 3rd March.
It is true that there has been no decrease in numbers on the live register between the 1st January and the 30th March, but this is in accordance with the normal seasonal trend. The number unemployed this year showed an increase between early January and early February followed by a general decline between then and the 30th March.
The measures taken to stimulate the economy in October and the further action taken in January last had specific regard to the problem of unemployment, and the indications are that they have helped to improve the underlying trend.
The Government regard the level of unemployment as a matter of vital concern and are keeping the situation under continuous review.
