Vol. 260 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - OECD Economic Report.

2.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the contents of a report issued by the OECD with regard to the Irish economy; if he will indicate whether the Government or any Government agency assisted in the compilation of the report; and if he will state the Government's attitude to this report.

I have seen the survey on Ireland just published by the OECD in its series of annual economic survey on member states. The Government provided factual data to the OECD secretariat and consider the survey to be a valuable objective analysis of the economy by OECD experts.

Did the Government take into account the suggestion by the OECD that there might be a price freeze?

The Government have established the National Prices Commission and have taken initiative already in that respect.

What about a price freeze?

The National Prices Commission and the legislation currently before the House in this respect are designed to ensure that price control stabilisation will be as effective as possible.

Perhaps the Minister does not know what I am talking about.

I do indeed.

I would suggest that the Minister should read the report.

I have read it.

The Minister is not able to answer my question.

Is the Deputy advocating a price freeze?

There is another part of that report.

Perhaps the Minister for Finance should answer that question. He seems to know more about it.
