Vol. 261 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Incendiary Devices.

33.

asked the Minister for Justice what progress has been made by the authorities in their investigations into the placing of incendiary devices in several Dublin business premises last week; the amount of damage caused by these devices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The incidents in question occurred within the past few days and Garda inquiries into them are continuing. As has been explained to the House on other occasions, I cannot undertake to make statements about Garda investigations that are still in progress.

The Minister will agree that there is a certain amount of disquiet about this and that there is a need for intensive investigation?

The Deputy can rest assured that the Garda are carrying out a most intensive investigation even at this very moment.

In view of the popular assumption in some areas that those perpetrating these outrages have come from Northern Ireland, will the Minister say if there is any conclusive evidence as to where in fact such persons come from, North or South, or any circumstantial evidence which he might be in a position to give to the House at this stage?

While an investigation is proceeding I would not be prepared to disclose any part of the evidence. There is some evidence available to the Garda. In fairness to them I do not think it would be right to talk about it here.

It does not necessarily point exclusively to Northern Ireland?

Not necessarily.
