Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - International Recognition of Driving Licences.

132.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the general operation of driving licence tests in the Republic, Northern Ireland and Great Britain and the growing conformity of road traffic legislation in these islands, he is prepared to seek a reciprocal agreement with the UK for the common recognition of driving licences; and if he has yet asked the British Government to review its decision not to enter into negotiations on this matter.

I have previously indicated my willingness to enter into such reciprocal arrangements with other countries, including the United Kingdom. The attitude of the British authorities in 1970 to international recognition of driving licences did not allow for re-opening the subject.
