Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Athlone Schools Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

50.

asked the Minister for Education the pupil-teacher ratio in the primary schools in that part of Saint Mary's Parish, Athlone, County Westmeath, which is situated in the urban area of Athlone.

The schools concerned are assumed to be St. Mary's Boys', Girls' and Infants' schools.

The pupil-teacher ratio in these schools is 38, 41 and 40 respectively.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary satisfied with that ratio, or would he not agree that it is too high?

I can only say that, with the number of teachers available and the programme of construction, I am satisfied with it at this time. I am not saying that it is the ultimate and most desirable.

In view of his limited satisfaction, may I suggest to him that the way in which it can be rectified is by providing more school buildings and more teachers and would he undertake to do this?

The Deputy is aware that a proposal for the provision, first of all, of prefabricated classrooms has been approved and the proposal for the construction of firm accommodation in one or other of these schools is also under consideration.
