Vol. 261 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Valuation System.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider departing from the provisions of the 1852 Griffith Land Valuation System in favour of a more modern and practical system.

Future policy with regard to the valuation of agricultural land will be considered by the Government in the context of the general review, which is proceeding, of the local finance and taxation system.

Is the Minister aware that the committee investigating this matter have been considering the question for the past four years? When does the Minister think they will finalise their work?

I could not give the Deputy a precise date on that point.

Does the Minister not consider it is taking them a long time to issue their findings? It is time that this matter was considered by the Government. Can the Minister do anything to expedite the matter?

I would point out to the Deputy that he is referring to a land valuation system which has been in operation for 170 years. It has lasted a long time and the Deputy cannot expect that it would be changed overnight.

I hope the Minister does not think the Commission will sit for such a long time.

I hope not.
