Vol. 261 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Industrial Proposal.

99.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the relative size of the reported investment of a firm (name supplied) in Dublin; and whether any estimate is available of the number of workers to be employed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will no doubt have seen a statement issued by the Irish company concerned indicating that employment would be provided for 165 people and that the undertaking was to supply the home market. As information relating to industrial proposals which comes to my notice must be treated in confidence until such time as the promoters choose to make it public, I am unable to give any further information at this time.

With regard to this Japanese factory which is setting up here in the car assembly business, to the Minister's knowledge have any contacts been made with the vehicle trade unions? It would appear superficially that the co-operation of such unions would be essential in ensuring that the proper grade of worker is obtained for work in this factory.

No contact has been made by my Department with the trade unions concerned. A notice was issued on 6th June indicating that an Irish company had been incorporated for the assembly and distribution of Japanese cars. I have no knowledge to hand as of now as to whether the company or representatives of the company made any contacts with the trade unions.

This is the first large-scale investment by a Japanese car company in Ireland.

It is, yes. Whether there has been any large scale investment by the Japanese company in the concern has not been stated.
