Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary Schools.

29.

asked the Minister for Education the financial assistance available to post-primary schools from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Financial assistance to secondary schools is given by my Department in the form of: (a) Capitation grants—£3,087,000 this year; (b) Supplemental grants in lieu of tuition fees (in the case of schools participating in the free scheme)—£3,977,000 this year; (c) Payment of incremental salaries of recognised teachers—£13,052,000 this year, and (d) Grants towards the cost of certain kinds of equipment and bonuses for choirs and orchestras— £240,000 this year.

Vocational schools are financed by the vocational educational committees which derive about 81 per cent of their funds—£11,279,000 this year—from my Department.

Comprehensive schools are financed directly by my Department—running cost this year is £703,000.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say under what Act is this financial assistance given to secondary schools?

That is a separate question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not aware that he is giving financial aid on schemes prepared by civil servants which are not even discussed in this House?

The Deputy will have every opportunity of discussing them.
