Vol. 261 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Channel Freight Services.

23.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the progress to date towards rationalisation of cross-Channel freight services.

The Deputy will recall that in April, 1970, I initiated a review of the policies of the State companies concerned with cross-Channel freight services. To assist me in that task I commissioned McKinsey and Company as consultants.

As a result of that review the B & I Company and CIE have reached agreement in principle on co-operation and rationalisation in the use of resources on their cross-Channel services. Discussions on matters of detail are proceeding.

Negotiations on a long-term basis are proceeding between the B & I Company and British Rail directed towards rationalisation of the total cross-Channel freight services of the two companies comprising the B & I Dublin/Liverpool route and the British Rail Dublin/Holyhead route.
