Vol. 261 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Civil Servants in EEC

31.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any progress has been made in selecting civil servants who will be needed to fill this country's quota in Brussels following accession to the EEC.

A preliminary screening has been made of civil servants interested in serving in senior positions with the EEC. The selection of staff will be made by the Commission and will not be confined to civil servants.

Is the Minister in a position to give any assessment of the number of civil servants who may be involved?

No, it is not possible to say.

When will the Minister be in a position to know how many civil servants are involved, because it will mean a big change in the Civil Service, will it not? Would he not know at this stage?

I cannot say at this stage with certainty that there will be any civil servants involved. It is very likely but I cannot say with certainty that there will. The recruitment will be by the Commission.

When does the Minister think he will be informed by the Commission?

I do not know, but it will be at least some months.

Have any soundings been made among our own civil servants?

Yes, they have. That is what I have said.
