Vol. 262 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Parking Facilities.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government why it was necessary to make a 50 yard section of the quays in front of the Four Courts Hotel, Dublin, a non-parking zone; if he is aware that this decision has added seriously to the traffic congestion in the area with regard to people seeking parking facilities; and if his Department will consider having the matter re-examined.

This is a matter for Dublin Corporation and the Garda. Following the installation of traffic light signals at the junction of Church Street and Inns Quay, these authorities imposed a prohibition on parking at all times for a distance of 120 feet back from the light signals on the river side of Inns Quay. This was done to ensure the effective use of the signals by securing that the inside traffic lane is kept free from turning traffic, thereby preventing congestion on the approach to the signals. I appreciate that restriction of parking facilities often imposes inconvenience but it is necessary to balance this against the need to ensure reasonable traffic flow.
