Vol. 262 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Grants.

30.

Asked the Minister for Education whether he will make arrangements to enable students from the Republic entitled to university grants to benefit from these grants while attending Queen's University, Belfast, or the New University of Ulster.

Higher education grant holders may benefit from these grants while attending degree courses in Queen's University, Belfast, or the New University of Ulster. This has been the position since the introduction of the grants scheme.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the increases in university fees and living costs, he will consider an immediate increase in grants payable to university students.

The question of adjusting grants paid under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, to take account of recently announced increases in university fees is at present under active consideration.

When will the Minister be in a position to make a statement on that matter?

Will it be before the beginning of the academic year? The Minister will appreciate that imposes very great hardship on the students with scholarships.

The Minister has done reasonably well up to now in relation to that matter.

I hope the Minister will take into consideration the students who are depending on the necessary decision.
