Vol. 262 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youth Leaders.

24.

asked the Minister for Education the number of trained youth leaders operating under the Dublin Vocational Education Committee; their areas of operation; whether any plans exist to increase recruitment; and whether any consideration has been given to appointing fixed quotas of trained youth leaders for various Dublin neighbourhoods with large populations of youths.

The Dublin Vocational Education Committee, through one of its sub-committees, Comhairle le Leas Óige, employs seven youth workers.

These workers operate mainly in the clubs affiliated to Comhairle le Leas Óige.

A working party was recently set up by an Chomhairle to look into the policies and effectiveness of the organisation. The question of appointing fixed quotas of trained youth leaders to specific areas is one of the items which the working party will consider. It is expected that their report will be available later this year.

Will the Minister agree that there is an urgency about the matter of appointing youth leaders to various centres in Dublin where local youth have little amenities or recreational facilities?

An Comhairle obviously regard the matter of appointing fixed quotas of trained youth leaders to specific areas as a matter which the working party should consider.
