asked the Minister for Education if he will indicate the net increase in grants-in-aid for university students during the period 1969-1972.

If, as I assume to be the case, the Deputy is referring to grants under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, the number of such grants held each year and their total value were as follows:

Academic Year

Number of Grants Held

Total Value

£

1968-69

1,119

252,183

1969-70

2,348

571,503

1970-71

3,562

918,016

1971-72

4,333

1,176,314

Is the Minister aware it is possible for a student to get four honours and two passes but not be eligible for a grant?

The Deputy is probably referring to particular subjects.

I am referring to particular subjects but it is four honours and two passes and the university grants scheme says four honours.

The regulations laid down relate to matriculation subjects.

96.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the level of fees in the National University of Ireland and Dublin University in 1960-61, 1965-66, 1971-72 and 1972-73; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested is set out in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report. The statement is self-explanatory and does not call for any comment from me.
