Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Employment in EEC.

6.

asked the Minister for Labour whether following this country's entry into the European Economic Community any restrictions will be applied by member states on Irish workers seeking employment in any of the member states; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Article 48 of the Rome Treaty provides for the freedom of movement of Community workers subject to limitations justified on grounds of public policy, public security, or public health. The freedom does not apply to employment in the public service.

Subject to what I have said, Irish workers seeking employment in the other member states of the Community will not be subject to restrictions. They might, of course, be required to produce identity documents.

Is the Minister aware there was a report in one of the newspapers which seemed to suggest that these regulations could involve a diminution in the number of Irish workers going to Britain and likely to get employment there? Could he say this is not the case?

I cannot see how it would have any effect on the present situation.
