Vol. 264 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Brucellosis Eradication.

30.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the countries fully enforcing EEC regulations and restrictions on imports of cattle which are not certified to be brucellosis-free; and the likely date at which those not now enforcing them are likely to do so.

As far as I am aware the existing member countries of the EEC are enforcing the animal health regulations regarding intra-Community trade in cattle which are not brucellosis free. No animal health directive as regards trade in cattle with third countries has yet been made but such a directive is at present under consideration.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is satisfied with the progress to date of the eradication of brucellosis in livestock; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The present position regarding the eradication of brucellosis is that six counties have been declared brucellosis free, that is, Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Monaghan and Sligo and compulsory eradication measures are in operation in five other counties, that is Longford, Louth, Meath, Roscommon, Westmeath and North-West Offaly.

I propose to extend compulsory eradication measures to counties Clare and Galway next spring.

I am not dissatisfied with the progress of the eradication measures to date.
