asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government will support the move to give the Council of Europe more authority in matters relating to the environment.

At a recent Conference of European Ministers with responsibility for matters concerning the environment, a number of recommendations addressed to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe were adopted. These recommendations, which seek to define the future work of the organisation in the environmental sector, will be examined by the committee in the framework of the general review of the organisation's activities which will shortly be undertaken.

Broadly speaking, the Government support such moves to give the Council of Europe more authority in matters relating to the environment.
