Vol. 265 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bottled Gas Standards.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he proposes to introduce safety standards for bottled gas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the question refers to domestic bottled gas and not to the gas cans used for picnic cookers.

I am advised by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards that the Liquified Petroleum Gas Technical Advisory Board, which represent producers and distributors of liquified petroleum gas in Ireland, have introduced a seal of approval for domestic appliances which satisfy safety requirements. This seal is being affixed to equipment since the 1st April.

The main danger with liquified gas appliances appears to arise from misuse or from accidents which cannot be attributed to faulty design or construction. The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards and the body representing the trade are, therefore, preparing simple instructions for safe use. These instructions will be affixed to each gas cylinder.

In view of recent statements by the Chief Fire Officers' Association I am asking the institute to advise me as to whether it is necessary to prescribe compulsory standards for bottled gas appliances or cylinders.

Would the Minister ask the advisers to consider also the question of the lifespan of these containers so as to ascertain for how long they should be in use? Many containers might be in use for a number of years. Some might be given a new coat of paint as a result of which defects might not be noticed.

That seems to be a reasonable request and I shall be happy to comply with it.
