Vol. 265 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaving Certificate Irish.

44.

asked the Minister for Education the number of candidates who obtained honours in the subject Gaeilge in the leaving certificate examination, 1972, and that number as a percentage of the total who sat the examination.

45.

asked the Minister for Education the number of candidates from schools in Gaeltacht or breac-Ghaeltacht areas who obtained honours in the subject Gaeilge in the leaving certificates examination, 1972 and that number expressed as a percentage of the total who sat the examination from such schools.

46.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students attending all-Irish schools in non-Gaeltacht areas who obtained honours in the subject Gaeilge in the leaving certificate examination, 1972; and this number as a percentage of the total number of candidates from the schools in question.

Mr. R. Burke

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 44, 45 and 46 together.

I am assuming that by "honours" in this context the Deputy means grade C level or a higher grade obtained in the higher paper in the subject Gaeilge at the leaving certificate examination, 1972.

The particulars sought are set out in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.

I wish to object to the manner in which the questions have been answered. Only one figure was required in each case.

The Deputy will appreciate he must ask a specific question. He may not make a statement.

Would the Minister not agree that with regard to the separate questions I put to him, as one figure would have answered the questions there was no need for a tabular statement?

Mr. R. Burke

I take it I have the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to circulate the particulars with the Official Report?

Is this the kind of petulance and arrogance we are going to get from people who so accused the former Government? I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to raise the matter on the adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy on the matter.
