Vol. 265 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Electricity Scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider extending the free electricity scheme for old age pensioners to include fathers or mothers who are old age pensioners residing with their sons, daughters or relatives.

Amendment of the provisions of the scheme on the lines suggested by the Deputy is not at present contemplated.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say that there is a lot of merit in the request and could he not prevail now on the Minister for Finance, in view of what we have been led to expect from him in tomorrow's budget——

I agree there is a lot of merit in the Deputy's suggestion but he will appreciate it is a matter of priority. I think I can assure the Deputy he will not be disappointed tomorrow.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary informing the House that he is aware of the contents of tomorrow's budget, or is he merely chancing his arm?

I am aware of our commitments prior to the election and I have every confidence they will be carried out.

He is very wise to get out of that one.
