Vol. 265 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Draft Directives.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the attitude he proposes to take on the EEC draft directive sent to the Council of Ministers regarding standards for weight controls for pre-packaged goods.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the attitude he proposes to take on the EEC draft directive sent to the Council of Ministers regarding weighing devices installed on conveyor belts.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 52 and 53 together.

Both of these draft directives are in the field of harmonisation of legislation, that is, designed to remove obstacles to trade in the Community caused by differing requirements in the different member countries. My attitude is that there is much in each of the directives which is immediately acceptable, but there are certain details which would present us with some technical difficulties and which we would prefer to see altered to coincide more closely with existing practice in this country. As these matters will be the subject of detailed negotiations within the Community, it would be inappropriate for me to indicate more specifically what the instructions to our negotiators will be.

54.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the attitude he proposes to take on the EEC draft directive sent to the Council of Ministers regarding standards for electrical meters.

The industry concerned has been consulted and it does not seem that the implementation of the directive in its present form would create any difficulties for it. It is understood also, that the implementation of the directive would not create any problems for the ESB.
