Vol. 265 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Open Plan School.

60.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware of the concern of the parents of children attending the "open plan" boys' national school, Ballygall Road East, Dublin, as to the safety and well-being of their children; and if he will have the matter investigated.

Neither I nor my Department have received any representations in relation to the matter referred to in the Deputy's question.

The position is that this is an open school catering for 1,000 students. A motorist, a motorcyclist or a cyclist may drive through this school yard. Does the Minister think that is a desirable situation?

Mr. R. Burke

It is understood from the Office of Public Works that one of the planning conditions laid down by the Dublin Corporation in regard to the boundary wall was that it was not to be more than three feet high. There are two possible reasons which occur to one: one is that a high wall serves to keep people out, and the other is that it serves to keep people in. Experience has shown in the past that high walls do not necessarily safeguard the schools. The Department are not aware that complaints have been received about the safety of the children. I am now so aware and will consider the position.
