Superintendents at the intermediate and leaving certificate examinations are selected from lists of suitable applicants who are serving whole-time teachers in post-primary schools. Preference is given to those applicants who have already discharged the duties of superintendent satisfactorily, and the remaining vacancies each year are filled in descending order of age of applicants. This practice is of long standing and is departed from only in emergency situations.
