Vol. 265 No. 14

Ceistéanna—Questions Oral Answers - Liffey Bridge.

57.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the proposed new bridge between Memorial Road and Moss Street over the river Liffey is likely to receive his sanction; and if plans are on hand for a high level bridge to be constructed to the east of that bridge.

The application by Dublin Corporation for a bridge order for the construction of a new bridge between Memorial Road and Moss Street is at present under consideration. I hope to make a decision in the matter at an early date.

A feasibility study has been made by the corporation's engineering consultants for a proposed high level bridge on the Macken Street line.

The preparation of detailed plans has not yet been put in hands.

Does the Minister agree that this is a matter of great urgency and that Butt Bridge is not able to handle the traffic at present using it?

I am aware that the traffic situation in Dublin is very bad. The Deputy may take it that we will press forward as fast as we can.

Can the Minister give me any idea when sanction is likely to be given?

I cannot because preparation of the detailed plans has not yet been put in hand.

Is there any danger that sanction will be refused?

Seeing that the detailed plans have not yet been put in hand, I do not know.

Is the Minister aware that there are also proposals for a new railway line near Butt Bridge and have any consultations taken place between the Department of Local Government and the Department of Transport and Power in this regard?

I am not so aware. That is a separate question.

Have consultations taken place?

There is an absolutely separate issue here. I cannot give any further information.

A Cheann Comhairle, because of the unsatisfactory answer to Question No. 42 I should like to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
