Ceistéanna—Questions Oral Answers - Cement Dust Fall-Out.

8.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has any reports on the dangers to the health of local residents arising from cement dust fall-out from cement silos at Cabra Road, Dublin.

I have not received reports of the nature mentioned by the Deputy. I am informed by the health board that their chief medical officer does not consider that there is a hazard to the health of local residents from cement dust fall-out in the area.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state on what grounds the chief medical officer has based his findings? The position is that there is a fall-out of cement dust daily. When, as a result of certain operations, pipes are burst the entire area is covered in cement dust and this must be a health hazard.

I can inform the Deputy that this complaint was also made some five years ago and the matter was then investigated with regard to the cement silo at Cabra. The then chief medical officer was of the opinion that there was no health hazard. I understand a further inspection has been carried out in the past few days and it was found that the situation was unchanged. The chief medical officer is satisfied a health hazard to the local residents does not exist.
