Vol. 265 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Regional Policies.

21.

asked the Minister for Finance if there are any proposals to draw up regional policies with Northern Ireland.

While the Government are disposed to participate in the preparation of regional policies with Northern Ireland, there are at present no definite proposals. I presume the Deputy has in mind the suggestion that such proposals would be drawn up in the context of the European Community. On this, I would refer him to a reply I gave to a question by Deputy Desmond on 17th May last. Many important decisions have to be made at Community level, in relation both to the proposed Regional Development Fund and to other matters, before the likely implications of Community policy are clear enough to enable specific proposals for cross-Border regional development to be drawn up.

Would it be reasonable to assume that this matter would be discussed at the meeting between Mr. Heath and Mr. Cosgrave?

I would consider that all reasonable matters would be discussed at such meeting.
