asked the Minister for Education the amount currently payable, in the form of fees and/or salaries, et cetera, to each of the members, including executive members, of the boards of the Higher Education Authority and the National College of Art and Design.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in the case of each of the following State bodies, the maximum number of persons who may be appointed to their boards, the principal occupation of each current member and the name of the appointing authority: the Higher Education Authority and the National College of Art and Design.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the total number of full-time, part-time (at peak) and other employees (b) the total payroll expenditure, including directors' fees and employers' superannuation and social welfare contributions, of the following State bodies during the latest available financial year : the Higher Education. Authority and the National College of Art and Design.
With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 147, 148 and 149 together and to circulate with the Official Report a statement giving the information sought by the Deputy.
Following is the statement:
The Higher Education Authority (H.E.A.)
1. Fees payable to members.
£500ex gratia allowance per annum per member. £3,220 p.a. payable to full-time Chairman.
2. Membership.
Section 2 of the Schedule to the Higher Education Authority Act 1971 provides that the members of the Authority shall be a Chairman and not more than eighteen ordinary members of whom at least seven shall be academic members, and at least seven shall be other than academic members. At present the Authority comprizes a Chairman and fourteen members. The Chairman and the members are appointed by the Government on the recommendation of the Minister for Education.

3. Staff.
As at 31st March, 1973 a total of ten full-time staff were serving with the Higher Education Authority.
The total payroll expenditure by the Authority for the period 15th May, 1972 (the date of its statutory establishment) to 31st March, 1973 was approximately £28,300.
The National College of Art and Design
1. Fees payable to members.
No fee or salary is paid to any member of the Board in respect of his services.
2. Membership.
The National College of Art and Design Act, 1971 provides that the members of the Board shall be a chairman and such other number (not being less than eight nor more than ten) of members, of whom one shall be the Director as the Minister for Education may from time to time determine.
The current board consists of ten members:

4. Mr. Cormac Mehegan, Designer.
5. Mr. Henry Healy, Painter.
