Vol. 266 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Admissions.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider changing the regulations governing admission to the Garda Síochána so as to allow married men to join the force.

The Commissioner of the Garda Síochána is not at present in favour of changing the regulations to permit the recruitment of married men to the force, in view of the difficulties which would be created in the allocation and transfer of newly recruited married men, having regard to their family commitments and housing needs.

The matter is one which will no doubt come up for consideration as part of the process of planning and development in the Garda Síochána and, at this stage, I should not like to take any hard and fast attitude in regard to it.
