Vol. 266 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gaeilge Courses.

26.

asked the Minister for Education in respect of the two separate courses in Gaeilge being prepared for post-primary students (a) if it will be compulsory that students pursue studies in one or the other and (b) if the leaving certificate double honour award will apply to both.

Mr. R. Burke

The courses to which the Deputy refers are still in the early stages of preparation and will go through the full process of consultation with interested bodies before being introduced into the curriculum. I can assure the Deputy, however, that whatever form the courses may finally assume it will be obligatory for every student to do one or other, that is, either a course in Gaeilge or a course in Irish studies of which the Irish language will be an essential element. When the new courses are introduced at leaving certificate level the double "honour" award will apply.
