Vol. 266 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Schools Teacher Appointments.

11.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the protests of the VTA and ASTI concerning the method of appointment of teachers to the community schools at Tallaght and Blanchardstown, County Dublin; and the extent of consultation with these and other bodies on the matters in question.

Mr. R. Burke

These protests were largely due to a misunderstanding of what was involved. The two associations were aware of the general arrangements in regard to the selection and appointment of teachers in these schools and also of the fact that a number of ordinary teaching posts would in equity be guaranteed to the religious orders involved. The associations, apparently, understood from questions put to them that these arrangements were being altered so as to extend the guarantee to certain posts of responsibility. This, of course, was never in question. Posts of responsibility in these schools will be filled in accordance with the normal arrangements.
