Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Speed Limits.

73.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the volume and dangerous speed of the traffic and the structural damage caused to a dwelling in Killinick, County Wexford, from the vibrations from such heavy and fast-driving vehicles on the Wexford to Rosslare road, he will make a speed limit order in relation to Killinick.

74.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the volume of heavy and large vehicles passing through the village of Foulksmills, County Wexford. and the concern of the local inhabitants at the speed at which such vehicles pass through the village, he will make a speed limit order in relation to Foulksmills.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 73 and 74 together.

Large commercial vehicles are already subject to a speed limit of 35 mph or 40 mph depending on the type of vehicles involved on all roads on which a lower limit does not apply. I will, however, have the Deputy's representations in connection with the imposition of a speed limit for all traffic at Killinick and at Foulksmills taken into account when speed limits are next reviewed in Wexford.

The enforcement of all speed limits is a matter for the Garda authorities.

75.

asked the Minister for Local Government the villages or areas for which Wexford County Council has requested speed limits and the present position with regard to them.

Representations for alterations in speed limits made by Wexford County Council related to the following areas: New Ross, Clonroche, Oylgate, Camolin, Blackwater, Kilmore, Great Island, Gorey, Enniscorthy. Wexford, Kilrane, Castlebridge and Taghmon.

These representations are currently being considered in my Department.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary ask his Minister to try to do something to speed up decisions on speed limit applications?

Some of those applications are two years old, I would think. There seems to be a heck of a delay so far as this type of application is concerned.

I will convey the Deputy's remarks to the Minister.
