Vol. 267 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) Electricity Supply.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if steps have been taken to improve electric power in Ballyfermot, Dublin.

I am informed by the ESB that the low voltage problem in Ballyfermot has arisen as a result of the continuing growth in the demand for electricity in the area and that the problem is receiving the attention of the board.

During the last two years considerable remedial measures have been taken which involved the provision of extra sub-stations and cables and the replacement of service wires on approximately 1,000 houses. A total of £25,000 was spent on this work last year and it is planned to spend a further £35,000 during the current year.

This problem has existed for some time, some efforts have been made to remedy the matter but I understand there is a proposal to build another 400 houses in the area. In view of that, would the Minister not regard this matter with particular concern? It is not only residential houses that are involved, there are also factory extensions being carried out.

I appreciate that but I would inform the Deputy that the ESB are planning to spend a further £35,000 this year in addition to the £25,000 spent last year in raising the voltage in the area.
