Vol. 267 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Production-line Workers.

28.

asked the Minister for Labour if it is proposed that there should be a reduction in the number of hours worked by production-line workers.

The normal industrial working week is now a five day 38-42 hour one. This has been brought about in negotiations between employers and unions in conditions of free collective bargaining.

I have no doubt that unions and employers will continue to give consideration to the matter of hours of work. Any further progressive changes in this area will have my continuing support.

No doubt the Minister is aware that the English Congress of Trades Unions have declared their intention to seek a 35-hour working week. Has the Minister any proposals to follow that line here?

That seems to be a separate question.

It is a matter for the trades unions and employers in negotiation.
