Vol. 267 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Animal Slaughter.

4.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his attention has been drawn to the report on the lecture by Professor E. F. Williams, O.B.E., with regard to the desirability to avoid (a) stress in animals before slaughter and (b) bad hygiene practices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen a number of reports on the lecture referred to by the Deputy. The effects of stress in animals before slaughter have been well known for some time and the desirability of reducing exposure to stress is fully appreciated. Standards of treatment of animals at slaughter premises under the control of my Department and hygiene standards at these premises measure up to the requirements for international trade.
