Vol. 268 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fluoridated Water.

29.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the reports that fluoridated water is more harmful than helpful; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the existence of Press reports such as those referred to by the Deputy. There is nothing in these reports which would lead me to depart from the view, accepted by the World Health Organisation and many other expert bodies, that fluoridation of water, at a specified level, is an effective and safe preventive measure against dental caries.

May I ask the Minister, in view of the statements made by the Minister for Finance in this House during a previous administration, whether the Minister for Health and the Minister for Finance are in agreement on this matter? The Minister for Finance, when in Opposition, held us up for weeks and weeks trying to prove that fluoridation did not work. This matter was taken to the High Court.
