Vol. 268 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lifeguard Services Grant.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make 100 per cent grants available to local authorities for the provision of adequate lifeguard services.

There are no funds at my disposal from which such grants could be allocated. Local authorities receive advice and assistance from the Irish Water Safety Association in various ways including the recruitment and training of lifeguards and the testing of equipment, and a State grant is paid from my Department's Vote towards the expenses of the association.

May I ask the Minister if any grants at all are available towards this service at the moment?

No, except those which are made payable for the expenses of the Irish Water Safety Association.

Would the Minister consider making a direct subvention to local authorities for the provision of this type of service?

Representations have been made recently about that matter and they will be considered.
