Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondhand Cars.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make regulations whereby any vendor of a secondhand car will be required to give a warranty of fitness or a guarantee for a limited period.

This matter does not come within the scope of the Road Traffic Acts.

The Minister, I gather, is concerned with road safety and unless there is some guarantee given to people buying secondhand cars, especially people buying them for the first time, surely this is a hazard to road safety.

I am sure if Deputy Lemass was buying a secondhand car he would do what I would do, ensure it was roadworthy before I would buy it. Unfortunately, there is nothing this Department can do about it.

I am glad the Minister is so qualified as a mechanic and engineer. I certainly am not.

I am sorry Deputy Lemass has not heard what I said. I would have my car checked, as he would if he were buying it. I think everybody should do the same.
