Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Environment.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the Government propose to co-operate with the EEC Council decision of 18th June, 1973, adopting a research programme for the EEC on the protection of the environment.

There is already active participation in the consideration at Community level of projects included in the research programme adopted by the Council. My Department are also represented on technical working groups considering certain research, or research related, aspects of water and air pollution, as provided for in the environmental programme adopted at the Council of Minister's meeting on 19th July, which I attended. An Foras Forbartha is actively involved in environmental research under the programme for European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research.

The establishment of a consultative committee to guide and review the environmental programme is under consideration at Community level. Participation in this and other appropriate research work will be considered as the need arises.

Would the Minister tell us of the actual steps he has taken other than making a few glossy speeches? What has been done to help to protect the environment?

If Deputy Lemass would put down a question on that or wait until my Estimate comes up in the House shortly I will be glad to give an hour-long explanation on what has been done and on what was neglected for years.

I look forward to hearing that. I do not believe it.

The Deputy does not understand me.
