Vol. 268 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swords Postal Sorting Office.

114.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that a caravan located on waste ground at Swords which is fenced in by Dublin County Council is the only accommodation available as a postal sorting office for this area in which a large number of factories and firms are located; and if he will state the action he proposes to take in the matter.

In the normal way, mail work at Swords should be performed at the local sub-post office. However, growth of delivery staff allied to limited accommodation at Swords sub-post office made it necessary in December, 1970, to relieve the subpostmistress of the work. Since then, postal sorting and delivery have been organised from a caravan which is situated on the site of the Department's telephone exchange off Bridge Street. Similar arrangements have been in use in comparable circumstances in other areas and have proved reasonably satisfactory in practice. I recognise however that the Swords area is developing fairly rapidly and my Department will keep the provision for postal work there under review.
