Vol. 268 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Child-resistant Containers.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make regulations concerning child-resistant containers for such products as household and garden chemicals.

The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards are keeping in touch with experiments in this field that are being carried out in certain countries that are better equipped to conduct the necessary research than we are. If worthwhile results emerge from these experiments I will consider embodying them in compulsory standards.

I understand that the Minister can make a regulation in regard to this matter without much difficulty. I understand also that great advancement has been made in this regard, even in the UK. Could the Minister not adopt some system that they have perfected?

Some faults have been found in the UK system. Other experiments are being carried out in the US and the Minister is awaiting the result of these before making any order.
