Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Environmental Planning.

103.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to give priority to matters such as physical planning and the environment.

I am not clear what exactly the Deputy has in mind. Does he suggest, for instance, that I should give housing a low priority? I can assure him that all the major matters for which I have responsibility are having and will have my due attention.

What I had in mind is whether in the planning of housing the Minister would take into consideration all environmental matters so as to ensure that the development will be in the best interests of the people who live in the areas.

One of the things that will be noted since the change of Government and since I took over the Department is that I have insisted this will be taken into consideration. The results will be some evidence of the interests being looked after. This is something which should have been done a long time ago but is only now being done.

I have read the Minister's statements and I will hold him to them.
