Vol. 269 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Population Density Definition.

6.

asked the Minister for Health the definition of low population density as stated in a publication (details supplied); and if he will indicate where such areas exist.

"Very low population density", which was the term used, was not defined in the publication referred to but was mentioned as an example of one of the factors to be taken into the reckoning in relation to hospital development.

In this ordinary usage very low population density refers to the areas where the population is below 50 per square mile. The census of Population of Ireland 1971, Volume 1 (Presentation Number 2564), has a map on page XI which indicates clearly the areas of various population densities over the country. Table 9, which commences on page 36 of the same publication, gives the population of each urban and rural area and each county and county borough including the number of persons per square mile in each case.

The map shows that out of the 34 former rural districts, with population densities of less than 50 persons per square mile, 24 are in the western counties.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell us whether any consideration was given to the details portrayed in these maps when the Coalition were drawing up the "gerrymander" Bill?

That is not relevant. It is not in order.

It is very relevant in the long term.
