Vol. 269 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Drugs.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make arrangements to curtail the use of drugs in the amine oxidase inhibitors group which can be fatal if the user takes cheese or alcohol afterwards.

The monoamine oxidase inhibitors are available to the public only on medical prescription.

The National Drug Advisory Board have warned medical practitioners of the dangers in using these preparations in association with certain other drugs and foods; similar warnings are contained in the literature relating to the substances circulated by the manufacturers to medical practitioners.

I am advised that there is no danger for patients who follow their doctors instructions in the use of these preparations, which are essential for certain conditions.

In the circumstances I do not consider that I would be justified in making arrangements to curtail the use of the drugs in question.
